Hospitality

The hospitality was warm, attentive and far more polished than the unassuming exterior initially suggested. The team were consistently kind and eager to help, creating an atmosphere that felt intimate rather than formal. Their care became an important part of why the hotel exceeded expectations so completely.

Room and Design

The Tonkin Suite was absolutely phenomenal and among the finest rooms we experienced in Hanoi. Its detailed interiors, generous layout and long private terrace gave the space far more presence than expected from a small boutique hotel. The bathroom was the true centrepiece, beautifully designed and grand enough to become one of the defining memories of the stay.

Sleep and Comfort

The suite provided a calm and comfortable retreat from the movement of Hanoi outside. The generous proportions made it easy to properly settle in, while the bed and quiet atmosphere allowed for a genuinely restful night. Everything felt designed for lingering rather than simply sleeping and leaving.

The Culinary Experience

Our experience of the hotel's wider culinary offering was limited, so it would not be fair to offer a complete judgement on its restaurant or dining identity. Dining therefore played only a small role in the final Ovelle recognition. The lasting impression came primarily from the suite, hospitality and atmosphere of the property.

The Guest Experience

What made the experience so memorable was the contrast between expectation and reality. From outside, the hotel appeared modest and easy to overlook, yet entering the Tonkin Suite revealed an extraordinary amount of detail, space and character. At approximately $180 for the night, the experience felt remarkable and became one of the greatest surprises of the entire trip.

Character and Sense of Place

The hotel feels rooted in Hanoi through its traditional details, intimate proportions and location close to both the Old Quarter and West Lake. The long terrace allows the surrounding neighbourhood to remain part of the experience, while the interiors provide a calmer interpretation of the city's character. The hotel sits around 600 metres from West Lake and approximately a ten minute walk from the Old Quarter.

Facilities and Wellbeing

The rooftop swimming pool is small, but its position above Hanoi gives it considerably more character than its size might suggest. It offers a peaceful place to pause, with views stretching across the skyline and towards West Lake. The facilities are not expansive, yet they suit the intimate scale of the hotel and add another memorable layer to the stay.

Editorial Verdict

Tonkin Luxury Boutique Hotel & Spa earns Three Ovelle because few hotels have exceeded our expectations so dramatically. The modest exterior gives little indication of what awaits inside, making the arrival into the Tonkin Suite feel like a genuine discovery. The room was spacious, beautifully detailed and filled with personality, while the extraordinary bathroom and long terrace gave the experience a sense of occasion far beyond the price paid.

The hotel's greatest strength is its ability to make boutique hospitality feel genuinely luxurious without losing its intimacy. The team were warm and attentive, the suite felt carefully composed and the atmosphere offered a calm contrast to the energy of Hanoi outside. It was not the scale or reputation of the property that made it memorable, but the thought placed into the room and the feeling of discovering something special.

Three Ovelle recognises a stay with remarkable character, impressive design and an emotional impression that remained long after departure. Tonkin receives the Most Surprising Stay editorial honour because it transformed modest expectations into one of the strongest room experiences of the trip. The wider facilities and dining would need greater depth for Four Ovelle, but the Tonkin Suite itself delivered something genuinely exceptional.

A Tonkin Suite with a private balcony

The Tonkin Suite is where the hotel is at its most itself, the lotus mural, the lacquer panels, the marble and green mosaic bathroom and the tiled balcony above the quarter all held in a single room.

The balcony is the second surprise and the reason to choose the suite over a standard room; ask for one on the higher of the floors for the fuller line of the city towers held in the middle distance.

Tonkin Luxury Boutique Hotel & Spa, the Tonkin for short, sits on Chau Long in Ba Dinh, the old French Quarter of Hanoi, a short walk from Truc Bach and the larger West Lake.

It is a small house that leans fully into Indochine design. Dark green panelling, black lattice screens, silk lanterns and lacquer artwork run through the public rooms, while the suites are crowned by painted lotus murals above the bed. The Tonkin name is worked into everything, from the amenities to the stationery.

A rooftop holds a pool and the Nón sky bar, looking out over the low roofs of the quarter. For its size the hotel reaches for a level of craft and detail that larger addresses in the city rarely match.

Despite its intimate scale and discreet street presence, the property places an infinity pool and sky bar on its rooftop, creating a far grander experience above the city than guests might expect when first arriving.
