The Carter Beau editorial charter

Beauty earns attention.
Trust must earn belief.

These are the standards governing every hotel review, Ovelle recognition, commercial relationship and factual correction published by Carter Beau.

01

Firsthand, always

Every hotel carrying an Ovelle recognition has been experienced in person by Mads Mura. No Ovelle review is assembled from press material, online research or another traveller's account.

02

Independence is not secrecy

Some stays are paid for by Carter Beau and some are hosted by a hotel. The funding of a stay is disclosed on its page. A hosted stay never guarantees coverage, determines the language of a review or influences recognition.

03

Recognition cannot be bought

Hotels cannot pay for inclusion, request an Ovelle, purchase a higher recognition or approve an editorial judgement before publication.

04

Commercial work stays separate

Carter Beau Studio accepts commissioned photography and storytelling projects. A Studio relationship cannot purchase editorial coverage or influence Ovelle. The relationship is disclosed wherever it is relevant.

05

Criticism must be useful

A review should identify both what distinguishes a hotel and what prevents it from becoming better. Criticism is specific, proportionate and based on the stay itself.

06

Corrections remain visible

Factual errors are corrected when identified. An editorial judgement changes only after a genuine return visit provides new evidence. Material changes are recorded on the review.

How Ovelle is decided

Seven pillars.
One complete stay.

Each pillar is considered on a ten point scale. The scores discipline the assessment, but the final Ovelle is an editorial judgement about the harmony of the whole. It is never produced by one impressive room, meal or gesture in isolation.

Pillar 01

Hospitality

Pillar 02

Room and Design

Pillar 03

Sleep and Comfort

Pillar 04

The Culinary Experience

Pillar 05

The Guest Experience

Pillar 06

Character and Sense of Place

Pillar 07

Facilities and Wellbeing

One Ovelle

A promising experience with glimpses of thoughtful intention.

Two Ovelle

An experience where quality and care are consistently present.

Three Ovelle

An exceptional experience distinguished by remarkable design, hospitality and atmosphere.

Four Ovelle

The rarest recognition awarded by Carter Beau. Reserved for experiences where every detail exists in complete harmony, creating a sense of quiet opulence that lingers long after departure.

Funding language

What each disclosure means

Personally funded: Carter Beau paid the public or agreed rate without a hotel contribution.

Hosted: The hotel provided all or part of the stay. This is disclosed, and the hotel receives no editorial control.

Informed visit: Carter Beau paid, but the hotel knew about the visit before arrival. This is disclosed because awareness can affect service.

Corrections and questions

Accountability remains open

Readers and hotels may identify factual errors. Evidence is reviewed by Mads Mura, and confirmed errors are corrected promptly. A disagreement with a judgement is not itself a factual correction.
