The measure behind every hotel we review
Ovelle is the ranking system of Carter Beau. Every hotel that appears in our Atlas is judged against it, and every review ends with it. When you see an Ovelle awarded, it means a place has been lived in, questioned, and found to hold harmony.
We arrive unannounced, we stay as ordinary guests, and we settle our own bills. No hotel can request a review, and none can influence one. Recognition is awarded in four degrees, from a single Ovelle to the rare Four Ovelle, the highest honour we give.

The rare harmony of beauty, intention, and quiet opulence, where every detail has purpose and nothing seeks attention.
It is not a measure of luxury. It is a measure of intention. Some of the world’s most expensive hotels will never earn Four Ovelle. Others will.
You will not find Ovelle in any dictionary. It is a word we coined for these pages, to describe the particular elegance we search for.
Why some places stay with us
Ovelle began with a question we could not put down. Why do certain places remain with us for years, while others, often grander and far more expensive, fade within days of departure? The answer, we found, was never the marble or the view. It was intention.
A hotel earns Ovelle when everything it does feels considered. The weight of a door. The fall of morning light across a corridor. A member of staff who remembers, without being asked, how you take your coffee. These are small things, and that is precisely the point. Quiet opulence lives in the details that never announce themselves.
We recognise thoughtful design over decoration, hospitality over service, atmosphere over amenity, and restraint over excess. What we are searching for, in the end, is emotional memory: the feeling a place leaves behind once the luggage is unpacked and the photographs are forgotten.
Four degrees of harmony

We do not award Ovelle for perfection. We award it for intention.
