A teaching hotel that has learned the lesson most forget, that service is a form of attention. Good value luxury in Kowloon, comfortable and well run, if quieter in lasting impression.

The Review
The Inspection Report
Every Ovelle is awarded after considering seven pillars that together define the complete hotel experience. These are the observations that shaped this assessment.
01
Hospitality
The service at Hotel ICON was warm, efficient and exactly what you would hope for at this level. Luggage was collected immediately on arrival, check in was straightforward, and every interaction felt pleasant. It never became deeply personal, but it remained polished and dependable throughout the stay.
02
Room and Design
The room was clean, modern and thoughtfully arranged, with several details that gave it a little more personality than expected. The curved sliding bathroom doors, large bed and rocking chair by the window made the space feel distinctive, while the Bose speaker and generous television added everyday comfort. The shower area was more compact and less private than ideal, but the room still felt well maintained and easy to settle into.
03
Sleep and Comfort
The bed was large and comfortable, although slightly firmer than some of the finest beds we have experienced. The room felt calm enough for a good night of sleep, with everything arranged simply and practically. It may not have been unforgettable, but it delivered the rest and comfort expected from a quality city hotel.
04
The Culinary Experience
We did not experience enough of the hotel's dining to judge its culinary identity in full. The bar area was attractive and provided a pleasant place to spend time, but the restaurants and in room dining remain something to explore on a future stay. For that reason, the culinary experience played a limited role in the final recognition.
05
The Guest Experience
Hotel ICON succeeds by making the stay uncomplicated. The complimentary minibar, filtered drinking water, Bose speaker and well considered amenities offered genuine value without feeling overstated. Nothing felt theatrical, but the experience was easy, comfortable and consistently pleasant from arrival to departure.
06
Character and Sense of Place
The hotel has moments of individuality, particularly in the curved bathroom design, the unusual rocking chair and the views from the pool. At the same time, the wider experience feels more like dependable modern luxury than a hotel with a deeply distinctive identity. It is enjoyable and well executed, but it does not remain in the memory in the way the strongest Ovelle properties do.
07
Facilities and Wellbeing
The gym was one of the strongest parts of the stay, with an excellent range of machines and everything needed for a proper workout. The swimming pool was equally appealing, offering an impressive view and a calm place to spend time above the city. These facilities gave the hotel more depth than the room alone might suggest.
Editorial Verdict
Hotel ICON earns One Ovelle because it delivers a reliable and well considered luxury stay at a very fair price. The room is clean and comfortable, the facilities are strong, and thoughtful additions such as the complimentary minibar, filtered water and Bose speaker make the experience feel generous. It consistently meets expectation without placing unnecessary friction in the guest's way.
What prevents a higher recognition is not a major failing, but the absence of a defining emotional impression. The service was pleasant rather than exceptional, the room was comfortable rather than remarkable, and the hotel never fully developed the character or sense of occasion found in stronger Ovelle properties. It is a hotel you appreciate while you are there, rather than one that continues to occupy your thoughts after leaving.
One Ovelle recognises the care and quality that are clearly present. Hotel ICON is easy to recommend for travellers seeking comfort, strong facilities and excellent value in Hong Kong, but it remains an accomplished city hotel rather than a destination in its own right.
Inside the Stay
The stay, told in four parts
Good value luxury in Kowloon, run by a teaching hotel that treats service as attention. Comfortable rooms, a beautifully considered building and helpful staff, held back from a higher note only by a certain reserve in the room and the atmosphere.
The Lobby, and Its Green Wall
Arrival is smooth and uncomplicated. Luggage is taken from the taxi, check in is completed quickly, and the room is ready without unnecessary ceremony. The first impression is one of quiet competence, with everything working as it should.
City Views from the Bed
The room reveals a few details that make it more interesting than expected. The curved bathroom doors, rocking chair by the window and complimentary minibar give the space personality, while the large bed and clean design make it easy to settle in. It feels practical, comfortable and thoughtfully arranged.
The Sky Lounge
Time spent beyond the room adds more to the experience. The gym is spacious and well equipped, while the pool offers a surprisingly strong view and a calmer atmosphere above Hong Kong. These spaces become some of the most memorable parts of the stay.
The Rooftop Pool
The final morning feels simple and comfortable. There is no dramatic reluctance to leave, but there is a clear sense that the hotel has delivered exactly what was promised. You depart feeling satisfied, rested and confident that the stay represented strong value.

The Room We Would Book
A high-floor room facing the skyline
The picture worth having is the Kowloon skyline through the wide window, so ask for a room on a high floor and on the harbour side of the building where possible.
The public rooms are more of an event than the guestrooms, so allow time for the sky lounge, the vertical garden and Above & Beyond upstairs; they are where the hotel is at its most itself.
Hotel ICON opened in 2011 on Science Museum Road in Tsim Sha Tsui East, a few minutes' walk from Kowloon's harbour front. It is unlike any other hotel in the city, because it is also a classroom.
The hotel is owned and run by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management, a working teaching and research hotel where students train alongside career staff. That lineage shapes the place, and the attentiveness of the service is often its most quoted quality.
The building carries serious design credentials. It was shaped by the Hong Kong architect Rocco Yim, with restaurants and public spaces by Conran & Partners and a soaring vertical garden in the lobby by the botanist Patrick Blanc. The result is a hotel that punches well above its price, comfortable and considered, if without the sense of occasion of the city's grandest addresses.
A Curious Detail
One of the room's most unusual features is the curved sliding bathroom entrance. It gives the layout a softer architectural quality and makes the room feel more distinctive, even if the open shower arrangement may not suit every guest.
