Every Ovelle is awarded after considering seven pillars that together define the complete hotel experience. These are the observations that shaped this assessment.

Hospitality

Hospitality was polished and courteous, with several members of the team bringing genuine warmth to the experience. The welcome felt refined, although the room was ready slightly later than expected and some interactions felt more reserved than others. Service remained professional throughout, but it never developed the deeply personal quality found in the strongest Ovelle stays.

Room and Design

The room on the ninety second floor was technically extraordinary, combining dark cinematic interiors with an almost uninterrupted view across Shanghai. The bathroom was the clear highlight, with extensive marble and gold detailing, heated flooring, a TOTO toilet, an enormous shower and a bathtub with its own television. Diptyque amenities, warm rugs and beautifully presented toiletries made it feel like a private wellness suite above the city.

Sleep and Comfort

The bed was extremely comfortable and the room felt remarkably peaceful despite being positioned above one of the busiest cities in the world. Thoughtful lighting and the generous proportions created an atmosphere that made it easy to rest. The height brought its own sense of stillness, making the city below feel almost distant.

The Culinary Experience

Dining was not the defining part of this particular stay. The in room menu felt exceptionally expensive, and we did not experience enough of the hotel's seven restaurants and bars to judge its complete culinary identity fairly. Dining therefore played only a limited role in the final Ovelle recognition.

The bar area, however, was a genuine standout. Live jazz, excellent snacks and beautifully made cocktails combined to create an unreal bar experience, elevated further by the knowledge that we were drinking in the highest hotel in the world.

The Guest Experience

The hotel offered several thoughtful luxuries that made the room particularly easy to enjoy. The complimentary minibar included water, soft drinks, beer and milk, while the tea service, coffee facilities and beautifully arranged glassware added a sense of generosity. Complimentary shoe care was another elegant detail, reflecting a hotel designed around traditional ideas of luxury.

Character and Sense of Place

J Hotel Shanghai Tower feels unlike almost any conventional city hotel. Its dark, mystical interiors and extraordinary elevation create an atmosphere shaped by engineering, art and the spectacle of Shanghai itself. The hotel sits within the upper levels of the 632 metre Shanghai Tower, placing guests inside the tallest building in China and among the highest hotel rooms in the world.

Facilities and Wellbeing

The wellness facilities were among the strongest parts of the experience. The swimming pool felt dramatic and almost futuristic, while the gym provided an impressive setting for exercising above the skyline. Together with the spa and beautifully designed bathroom, these spaces gave the hotel a convincing sense of physical escape.

Editorial Verdict

J Hotel Shanghai Tower earns Two Ovelle because it delivers one of the most technically impressive hotel experiences we have encountered. Sleeping on the ninety second floor of Shanghai Tower creates a perspective that few properties can reproduce, while the bathroom, skyline views, wellness facilities and generous room amenities all contribute to a stay with undeniable scale and spectacle.

The bathroom was particularly exceptional. Heated floors, extensive marble, gold detailing, Diptyque amenities, a vast shower and a bathtub overlooking Shanghai created a space that felt more ambitious than many complete hotel rooms. The complimentary minibar, shoe care service and carefully presented refreshments continued the sense that no practical luxury had been overlooked.

What prevented a higher recognition was the emotional distance within the experience. The hotel was easy to admire, but more difficult to feel personally connected to. Hospitality was professional rather than consistently intimate, dining did not meaningfully shape the stay, and the remarkable design occasionally felt more concerned with spectacle than warmth.

Two Ovelle recognises a hotel that is visually extraordinary, technically ambitious and unlike almost anywhere else in Shanghai. J Hotel is a place we admired deeply, even if it did not create the emotional attachment found in our most memorable stays. It is an experience worth having for the height, the bathroom and the feeling of seeing an entire city beneath you.

Inside the Stay

The stay, told in five parts

The highest hotel on earth, and it delivers on the view and the engineering. What it does not quite deliver is warmth, and a delayed check-in and expensive restaurants keep an extraordinary stay from being a fully personal one.

The experience begins with the journey upward through Shanghai Tower. As the lift rises, the scale of the building becomes increasingly difficult to comprehend. By the time you reach the hotel, the city no longer feels around you, but far beneath you.

The room immediately feels dark, cinematic and highly composed. Shanghai stretches beyond the windows, but the bathroom soon becomes equally commanding, with marble, gold and warm lighting creating the atmosphere of a private spa. It is one of those rare spaces where the practical details become part of the spectacle.

Time inside the room reveals a generous collection of thoughtful features. Complimentary drinks, a refined tea service, quality toiletries and shoe care make the experience feel complete, while the bed offers a peaceful place to watch the city disappear into evening. The hotel feels less like an escape from Shanghai and more like an observation point above it.

The swimming pool and fitness spaces continue the almost futuristic character of the hotel. Exercising or swimming at this height feels unusual enough to become part of the memory itself. The city remains present through the windows, but the atmosphere inside feels quiet and controlled.

Morning light reveals the scale of Shanghai all over again. The room has delivered comfort, remarkable design and a perspective that is almost impossible to reproduce. You leave impressed by the ambition of the hotel, even if the experience remains something admired from a distance rather than felt deeply.

A high-floor room facing the Bund

The view across the river to the Bund is the reason to come, so ask for a room on the western side of the tower and as high in the hotel's range as they will place you.

The dining upstairs is expensive by design, so hold room service and Heavenly Jin as the two dining choices worth making, and let the view carry the rest of the stay.

J Hotel occupies the top of the Shanghai Tower, which at 632 metres is the tallest building in China and, when it opened, the second tallest in the world. The hotel sits on floors 84 to 110, its rooms beginning higher than most towers end.

It is the flagship of the Jin Jiang group, the state-owned company among the largest hotel operators in the world, and it was conceived as a statement of Chinese luxury rather than an import of a Western brand.

The building itself, a twisting glass form by the architects Gensler, is engineered against the wind and served by some of the fastest lifts ever built. Heavenly Jin, the restaurant on the 120th floor, ranks among the highest in any building anywhere.

For all the engineering, the hotel is at its most persuasive when it simply lets the city fall away beneath the glass. The view is the reason to come, and the rooms, comfortable and well equipped, keep a certain corporate reserve.
